I wish there were stronger laws protecting people from racist behavior

More on that story of the racial tensions in Jena Louisiana. See people might live in a metropolitan city and have a diverse group of friends, and think racism is a non-issue anymore. I contend all you have to do is take one little trip to some small town in the south and you will change your thinking. Just read this story, it is like it is from another time. This is a town which is virtually completely segregated, (15% black 85% white) where black people complain they can't get jobs or housing because of the color of their skin, and when black kids sit under the "white tree" in the school yard the next day the white kids hang nooses in the tree. Then when black kids act violently toward white kids getting in a little fight they get charged with conspiracy to commit murder. It is a clear case of systematic racism in its purest form. This story didn't take place 30 years ago, it happened this year. This effects everyone. If you don't have a diverse group of friends you probably hear crazy things all the time like white people saying the 'n'word when they are only in the company of other white people, or black people saying "man I can't stand all these crackers" when in the company of only black friends. Even things like making a decision not to live in an area because demographically it doesn't reflect your skin color is pretty racist. I have always lived in large urban areas and hear crazy things all the time so it doesn't surprise me when I hear stories like this in some small town in the south, but it does sadden me.

Racism at the US border. Canada and its Indian Act are highlighted in this story

Kansas City's racist ex representative Ralph Arza was sentenced to 18 months probation, 150 hours of community service, anger management classes, and probably best of all, he cannot hold public office while on probation. Yes score one for the good guys.

Racism in Atlanta, where volunteers at Hands On Network (works to build better communities through volunteerism) were threatened in a racist letter.

Racism in Garland Texas, where Indian Christian preacher Kashmir Masih woke up to find swastikas and go to hell spray painted on his home and car. Hate crime.

It is so true that there are many "closet racists" in our society. So many folks who act one way in front of those who make not look like them, and then pull out this xenophobic bullshit once the doors are closed.

I understand that we live in a country that was founded on racist ideals, and thus, it is hard to escape the perpetuation. Yet, there are numerous examples of the ways in which people fight against it. In fact, many movements would not have taken place without someone in the majority (i.e. men or white people) lending a hand, and advocating on behalf of those who are oppressed.

If one is in a position of power -- be it because of their skin, their class, their educational status, or other -- they should take that status and use is as leadership.

Stand up for yourself. Stand up for those not present. Stand up for the fact that we are ALL human beings who live together on the planet Earth. We have an obligation to lift eachother up...it is for the future of one RACE...the HUMAN RACE.
